Millennium Woodlands Project
Environmental pledge for woodlands in the new Millennium
Birmingham has over 100,000 trees lining its streets remnant ancient hedgerows and 25 ancient woodlands. The Millennium Woodlands Project represents an environmental pledge by the City Council to mark the start of this new Millennium: “for all the years and generations to come, people in every ward of the City will have access to their area of woodland or chosen tree cover”. This was first celebrated by a tree planting event at Bromford Lane school. The pledge is shared by the other partners in the project including The Forestry Commission, Groundwork Trust and Birmingham Rotary.

Energy Matters
Enabling young people to recognise the value of energy conservation
We were looking for secondary schools to pilot a new excellent educational resource with Year 7 pupils which supports work in science, design and technology and citizenship.  Training and support for this project was provided along with an excellent booklet of resources full of useful classroom activities.

The Jaffabox Competition
Design challenge for recycling cardboard boxes
An exciting design and make competition sponsored by Jaffabox the Birmingham based cardboard box manufacturer. The challenge was for pupils to produce ideas and plans to redesign a standard printers’ A4 stationery box for a second use thus extending its usefulness rather than being prematurely scrapped. Participating schools were provided with 200 boxes to assist with their project and substantial prizes of books awarded for winning designs.
