CPD for Teachers

What does good CPD look like?

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) is the main national body responsible for teacher development and the teacher section of its web site is a good place to start looking at professional development for teachers

Also you will find a wide range of information and guidance on career development and CPD on Teachernet.

Teachers Standards Framework
The new Teachers Standards Framework outlines the knowledge, skills and attitudes which class based teachers need at each stage of their career from QTS up to Advanced Skills Teacher.

The Standards include Threshold Standards which teachers on Mainscale need to look at when preparing to apply for Threshold and also, for example, the standards for Senior Teachers setting out expectations for teacher post-threshold as well as those for Excellent Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher.

Middle Leadership
The advent of posts with Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) payments has refocused the role of "Middle" leaders in school - and provides a key first step into management / leadership for teachers. The National College for School Leadership (NCSL) provides the best starting point for current and aspiring Team Leaders to consider their own CPD and career development.

Within Birmingham information and guidance about locally delivered NCSL programmes for Middle Leaders is available from the Adviser for Middle Leaders.

Keeping a personal portfolio
A professional development portfolio is a confidential and entirely voluntary collection of physical and / or electronic material that records and reflects the work you have undertaken. It is a way of using your experiences and current activities to demonstrate and reflect on:

  • Skills learned and impact that you have made
  • Identify future learning needs and priorities
  • Inform and plan prospective learning development

It provides a mechanism, together with your performance review, for thinking about your work practice in a planned and systematic way.

Local Opportunities for training and professional development
The School Effectiveness unit provides a range of programmes and courses for teachers covering many aspects of your professional development -
you should also talk with your Team Leader and the school's CPD Co-ordinator.
