Post 16 Transport

Post 16 student travel assistance

Birmingham LEA is unable to provide travel assistance for those students who are 16 years and older and are remaining in Further Education, with the exception of those students who have special needs.

Birmingham's Post 16 Transport Policy Statement is available from our Documents page.

The Post 16 Transport Policy statements from all LEAs in England and Wales are available at the DfES web site.

Students who are aged 16 - 19 and are in full time Further Education can apply for an Education Maintenance Allowance.  Students can spend this money in any way they wish and can use this towards their transport costs.

Students with Learning Difficulties and / or Disabilities

Assistance is considered by the LEA Education Transport Service (ETS) for those students who have a “Statement of Special Educational Needs” and who are either remaining at a Special School or attending the nearest appropriate School Sixth Form or College of Further Education which meets their needs.  Applications are considered on their own merits.

Outside the Birmingham area

The ETS can also consider helping those students with special needs that attend specialist schools/colleges outside of the Birmingham area.  Further information can be obtained from your personal advisor at school or college or from your local Connexions Centre.

Public Transport

There is an extensive public transport network of buses, trams and trains in the Birmingham area.  Further information from Centro and Travel West Midlands on the types of passes that can be purchased can be seen in the Birmingham Post 16 Transport Policy Statement available from our Documents page.

Other Support provided by Learning Establishments

Birmingham and Solihull Learning and Skills Council delegate funding to schools and colleges of further education.  These funds are generally made available to those students not in receipt of an EMA.  Further details are available from the school or college the student is attending or from the students local Connexions Centre.

Birmingham and Solihull Connexions Service

Birmingham and Solihull Connexions Service provides young people who use connexions centres with advice and information on bus and train routes and travel passes.

Further information can be seen in the Birmingham Post 16 Transport Statement available from our Documents page.
