Sustainable Birmingham

Our aims for a sustainable Birmingham

In order to highlight the issues and look at the actions we are going to take we need to have a set of goals and visions which would help to move Birmingham towards a more sustainable future.  These show what all of us should be working towards.

In a sustainable Birmingham we would:

  • have access to decent food, water, shelter and fuel at a reasonable cost.
  • limit pollution of the air, land and water
  • where possible, to meet local needs locally
  • have the opportunity to undertake satisfying work and have the value of unpaid work recognised
  • use resources efficiently, minimise waste and to recycle
  • protect the variety of wildlife and increase biodiversity

  • have good health protected by a supporting environment with health services which emphasises the prevention of illness and gives proper care for the sick
  • be able to access services and people while causing least damage to the environment and not just limiting them to those with cars
  • live without fear of personal violence from crime or persecution
  • have access to the skills, knowledge and information which would enable us to play a full part in society
  • empower all sectors to participate
  • have opportunities for culture, leisure and recreation for all
  • value local distinctiveness.

All of these aims are of equal importance and apply to all of us in all things we do.
