More comments and ideas for action.
There were lots more ideas and great comments. Here are some of them:
- Make sure what has been said today takes action
- This type of event should be replicated at a local level across the city to include more schools and youth
- Can we set up a multi-agency forum to meet regularly?
- A national schools competition – poster and slogan, prize for the best slogan to be displayed in all Birmingham schools
- Have young people on steering groups
- Find out why bullies bully
- Everyone should work as a team to fight against bullies
- Make sure school policy clear to students and their families
- Share conference experience with schools
- No schools to be in denial. Give them 6 months to feedback progress, then 12 months feedback
- Ensure all are represented at next summit eg Special Schools
- Change targets so that schools don’t pretend bullying doesn’t exist to look good
- Teach how to make friends
- Introduce “respect” into the curriculum
- Screen savers which can be downloaded (silent protest)
- Anti-bullying champions – celebrity endorsement
- Tackle by-stander culture
- Handbook for adults to understand how to combat bullying
- Workshops for carers and parents
- Confidential help by text, email etc – City Service
- Show bullies how it is to be bullied by showing pictures of bullying
- I think to stop bullies in the future, we should listen to the bully’s point of view or even make bullies listen to the victim
- Teenagers/children might find it easier to talk to other teens/children
- Make areas safe for children when not in school
- Use cameras so the bullies know they are being watched
- We must encourage more working together with our children to construct together strong shared and cool messages on our right to freedom from bullying. It is not grassing – it is standing up for freedom
- Focus partnership working/resources in “bullying” hotspots – areas of greater need
