The Graduate and Registered Teachers
Programme
The GRTP is an employment-based route to Qualified Teacher Status.
There are two distinct routes into teaching via this
programme:
- The Registered Teacher Programme
(RTP)
The RTP usually last two years and is available to undergraduates having completed the first two years of a degree or equivalent.
For information on qualifications and skills required to apply, please see
A Guide for Potential
Trainees compiled by the Training and Development Agency
(TDA).
- The Graduate Teacher Programme
(GTP)
For the GTP, you must already have a first degree or the equivalent. The training period is usually one year.
For information on qualifications and skills required to apply, please see
A Guide for Potential
Trainees compiled by the TDA.
The Process
To make an application to the
TDA for acceptance on the scheme, you need to find a school willing to employ and train you to the required standards.
The school will need to find a Designated Recommending Body
(DRB).
DRBs are organisations that deliver the GTP in England.
DRBs are given an annual allocation of GTP places by the
TDA.
The DRB takes responsibility for designing and delivering your training programme.
Most DRBs are partnerships of bodies such as schools, local
authorities (LAs) and accredited initial teacher training (ITT)
providers.
Birmingham LA is a Designated Recommending Body and can support trainees and schools through the process.
Please note we only act as a DRB for trainees working in
Birmingham Schools.
