- When will I receive the induction support grant?
Schools who have registered their NQT will have their funding confirmed by letter; we aim to get this to schools in the first ten days of November, then in the week following the spring and summer half term break.
- What can the induction support grant be spent on?
The induction support grant can be allocated to support any aspect of an NQT’s induction, for example attendance on courses, costs of the additional release time, cover for Induction Tutors etc.
The grant is not intended to be used to purchase resources or equipment.
The grant cannot be vired to other budgets; schools should keep simple records for audit purposes.
- How should NQTs use their 10% additional release time?
NQTs additional release time is CPD time, recognising that NQTs are still learning their profession.
It will be linked to NQTs’ development
objectives.
The time should be
negotiated with – and probably initially directed by - their Induction Tutor.
- How much time will I need to spend as Induction Tutor?
Partly this will depend on your NQT: some NQTs need more support than others.
But we can predict the amount of time needed for the key events:
- Lesson observation & feedback: about 1¾ hours, x 6 = 10 hours
- Review meetings inc. preparation: about 1 hour, x 6 = 6 hours
- Assessment meeting and admin: about 1 hour, x 3 = 3 hours.
The total is roughly 19 hours, or half an hour a week per NQT.
As Induction Tutor you won’t necessarily be directly responsible
for all these activities (though you might be doing many of them), but somebody must, so the time demands do need to be thought out.
This is particularly true for schools with several NQTs, who need to be asking the question: do we have the capacity to support, monitor and assess several NQTs properly?
- I don’t have my
DfES/teacher number!
Each teacher has their own unique number, issued by the training institution during the final year of training. An exception is those on the Graduate Teacher Programme, whose numbers are issued at the end of training.
Teachers should contact the
General
Teaching Council, or for Graduate Trainees, their training provider, if they do not know their number.
- I haven’t passed my skills test…
The three skills tests are part of the Standards for
QTS. If you’ve not passed one or more of the tests, you have not got QTS so you cannot begin induction.
In the meantime you can work unqualified, but must make every effort to
pass the skills test/s as soon as possible.
The GTC checks induction records to ensure everyone submitted has QTS, so it is not possible to avoid this rule.
Once the final skills test has been passed, you can begin induction – make sure your school
registers you as an NQT with the new start and end date.
- When will NQTs receive their induction certificate?
The GTC sends Induction Certificates to the LA around the half term following the induction end date.
The LA posts certificates to the school where the teacher completed induction.
If you have any specific queries, please contact the NQT administrator in
Schools Plus.
