Professional Development for NQTs and Tutors

BASS organises a wide choice of courses for NQTs, as part of the LEA’s commitment to recruitment and retention. They are highly regarded by participants.

Courses are offered for Induction Tutors and both Primary and Secondary NQTs:
  • induction conferences (July, September, January)

  • subject development days
    (in each term for primary, spring term only for secondary)
  • extended support programmes (day and twilight courses all year)

Induction Tutors

Induction Tutor Training 
A one or three-day course providing teachers with opportunities to widen their understanding of the induction of NQTs with regard to monitoring support and assessment, and the scope of their role as induction tutors.


Primary NQT Support Programme


Early Induction Conference
This conference is for newly qualified teachers who have begun work in primary and secondary schools from 1st July 2007. The conference will introduce and welcome NQTs to teaching in Birmingham: they will have the opportunity to take part in a range of seminars, presentations and workshops.

NQT Primary Induction Conferences 
The purpose of these conferences is to introduce and welcome newly qualified teachers in Primary schools to teaching in Birmingham, with an opportunity to meet Tony Howell, the Strategic Director, and take part in a range of seminars, presentations and workshops.

  NQT Spring Term Induction Conference
Intended specifically for NQTs who began work in Birmingham schools in January 2008, the purpose of the conference is to introduce and welcome newly qualified teachers to teaching in Birmingham, with an opportunity to meet Tony Howell, the Strategic Director, and take part in a range of seminars, presentations and workshops.

NQT Primary Additional Development Days
Day courses specifically designed for NQTs, with a choice of courses in the autumn, spring and summer terms.  Their purpose is to develop and share knowledge, covering National Curriculum core and foundation subjects in Key Stages 1 and 2.

Accreditation

BASS has a partnership arrangement with UCE to accredit the work of NQTs on the extended primary and secondary courses towards Masters level programmes.

NQTs can gain credit towards Masters degrees for their work during the Induction year through a scheme run by Holyhead Training School.
