Extreme Weather
Emergency closure of schools

In the event of extreme weather conditions a central decision is made by the Strategic Director in consultation with the Chair of the Education Committee whether or not to close schools.  Any such blanket decision affecting all schools to close or stay open is announced through Radio WM, Heart FM and BRMB by 6.45am at the latest.

Radio station telephone contacts

BRMB 0121 566 5430
BBC Radio West Midlands 08453 009956
Heart FM 0121 607 7288

If the Local Authority makes a central decision to close schools its advice is that teaching and support staff are not required to attend.

A minority of schools may not be able to comply with a central decision to remain open due to factors unique to the school such as heating failure and in such circumstances Headteachers need to communicate this decision to the parents via the radio stations.

When a school is in session any decision on closure is a matter for the individual head teacher.
