School Records
Accessing school records

Many old school records are held at the City Archives at the Birmingham Central Library.  Records under 100 years old are not generally available to view as they contain personal information about living individuals.

Members of the public may make a written request to be given information from closed school records.  (Under the Terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 members of the public may be able to have access to certain records.) This could be personal data about themselves under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998, about other people who are now deceased, or if the data is over 100 years old.  If personal data on a third party is requested (wants to be viewed), and that person is still alive, then their permission would need to be given before any information could be released.  A fee may be charged for searches of closed records.

It is also possible to make an application to view closed school records in order to conduct research.  An application to consult closed material can be obtained by contacting City Archives on 0121 303 4217 or by email at: archives@birmingham.gov.uk.  The application form should then be completed and returned to Jenny Wheeler at School and Governor Support, Knox House, Martineau Centre, Harborne, B32 2EH.
