Checklist for Reviewing School Policies

Before reviewing any policy check what its requirements are:

  1. Is this policy legally required?
  2. Is it required by OfSTED?
  3. Is the policy strongly recommended for our school?
  4. Is there a Local Authority model of example Policy that we can use?
  5. What must the Policy contain in order for it to be legally compliant?
  6. How often should we review this Policy and when did we last review it?
When reviewing the policy:
  • Check for accuracy including spelling, grammar etc. (e.g. Has the school’s name changed since the policy was last reviewed).

  • Check that any specific references to individual members of staff or staff positions are up to date.

  • Check that any specific references to legislation (education acts and regulations), DCSF and OfSTED circulars are up to date. Wherever possible it is best to make general references for example “ the School will comply with the relevant legislation relating to Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) in School.”

  • Ensure that any related issues and priorities from the school improvement and OfSTED action plans are taken into account during the review process and ensure that the Governing Body or the relevant committee that is reviewing the policy are aware of what these issues are.

  • Ensure that review and formal adoption of the amended policy, or re-adoption of the existing policy, is recorded in the minutes of the governing body or committee that is responsible for the policy review.

  • As soon as possible after the review ensure that the updated policy replaces the existing file copy and that the updated policy contains the date that is was adopted/re-adopted and ideally, the date that it will next be reviewed.
