International Visits

Visits to and from abroad

There are two types of international visit: study visits abroad and visits from abroad.

Study visits abroad

The International Development Unit (IDU) is organising the participation of teachers in study visits abroad under the Teachers International Professional Development Programme (TIPD), which has been initiated by the DFES. This programme allows 45 teachers a year to visit a country abroad and observe best practice in a specific area of work.  Visits abroad:

  • Give teachers the opportunity to observe good practice overseas and to reflect on their own teaching styles and strategies.
  • Help to understand differences.
  • Broaden horizons and help to reduce prejudice.

In addition, the IDU promotes information on other international training schemes to primary, secondary and special schools.

Please view our Study Visit Reports page to read reports from previous participants.

Visits from abroad

Birmingham’s innovative approach to education and its rich programme of initiatives are gaining an international approach. Every year, a number of delegations from as far a field as China or Azerbaijan come Birmingham to observe good practice in schools and meet with people responsible for shaping and advising on policies and strategies.

Many schools find it rewarding to host a delegation, as it will:

  • Raise awareness of other cultures.
  • Encourage pupils to want to know more about global issues.
  • Develop the confidence of children when meeting with visitors.
  • Broaden their horizon and help to reduce prejudice.

If you want your school to be on the list for a visit, please contact the International Development Officer.
