What is a healthy school? A healthy school is one that is successful in helping pupils to do their best and build on their achievements.
It is a school which has created an enjoyable, safe and productive learning environment.
A healthy school is committed to continuous development through self review and promotes an ethos of achievement; of valuing each member of the community; and supporting the development of all pupils to make the most of their gifts, talents and abilities.
The Birmingham Healthy School Standard is a partnership between education and health and is part of a national initiative that provides support for schools through the developmental process and consequential activities.
The activities which schools choose to address are intended to be embraced and emphasised across every curriculum area and actively backed by every section of the school community.
A school which gains the Birmingham Healthy School Standard will be recognised throughout the country as one which meets the agreed national standards and, has demonstrated its commitment to pupil welfare and well-being.
Being a healthy school includes not only teaching and learning about health, but teaching and learning in a healthy way.

Schools are required to devise four areas of development that address the seven areas of school improvement as applied to the eight National Healthy School
themes, as shown in the table above.
Please visit our Achieving the Standard page for more information on the Standard and to find out how you can join.
The targets are agreed with the project co-ordinators who will draw up a Service Level Agreement which will detail the required input from the school and the support provided.
