Training opportunities for governors and clerks

In the Governor Training programme you will find an outline of specialist courses.  These generally take place on Saturdays or during the evenings and are available to all governors.  They aim to address areas of governance where specialist knowledge or an awareness of current initiatives is vital.  Other courses cater for the training and update of clerks to the governing body, keeping them abreast of meeting protocol, legal requirements, etc.

In addition to these, the Governor Training Team provide tailor made, whole governing body training to address individual governing body needs.  This may well be of a more strategic nature, to support governing bodies in the strategic management of their schools.

The induction of new governors is a training priority and regular New Governor Induction Courses are held, to give new members to an overview of the roles and responsibilities of governors.  View a summary of training and development on the Document page.

To help governing bodies review their own training needs, ‘The Effective Governing Body – An Audit Tool’ is published on an annual basis.  This, along with the governing body work-planner, forms a framework for assessing procedures and policies necessary to ensure effective governance.  You can request a copy of the Audit Tool and companion documents via governors@birmingham.gov.uk

The link governor directs individual governors to training and support available and liaises with the Governor Training and Support Team through regular briefing sessions and meetings.

If you are a member of a governing body without a link governor – nominate someone to play this vital role now – or you may miss out on updates and training opportunities!
