Planning tasks for the Link Governor

The main planning season for schools tends to be in the summer in preparation for the new academic year.  So it is with Governing Bodies (GBs), reviewing their performance over the year and setting themselves up for the next.

This page outlines the tasks for the Link Governor, with more detail available via the menu.

  • Skills and experience audit
    • Identify the skills and experience that each colleague governor brings, and if there are any specific areas of governors' work in which they wish to participate.
    • There is an aide memoire form that may help to format an informal interview and record the outcome.

  • Succession planning
    • Establish the range of 'jobs' and brief job descriptions on your GB:
      • individual governor roles, including Chair and Vice-Chair
      • committee membership
      • committee Chairs.
    • Construct and agree a 'succession plan' for your GB:
      • match governors to jobs now and into the future
      • allow for periodic elections, governors’ wishes and suitability
      • aim for a good spread of experience and expertise.

  • Development planning
    • Construct and agree with the GB a training and development plan that supports the succession plan
    • Ensure a good spread of training and development opportunities across the GB membership
    • Agree with individual governors their course attendance:
    • Ensure a match with budget provision

  • Inducting new governors
    • Write and update the induction process
    • Assemble the induction pack
    • Ensure a mentor or contact governor is appointed for each new governor
    • monitor and manage the process.
