Wages and Salaries
Comprehensive and efficient payroll services

The Wages and Salaries Team have considerable expertise in the provision of a comprehensive payroll service to schools and the Department for both teaching and non-teaching staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Processing and calculation of gross pay and deductions for National Insurance and Income Tax for Education Department employees. In an average week, 10,700 staff are paid.

  • On a monthly basis, the Section pays approximately 10,800 teachers, 3,600 sessional staff, 5,800 support staff, and 3,300 pensioners.

  • Processing of Statutory and Occupational Sick Pay and Maternity Pay.

  • Processing of Magistrates, County Court, and Child Support Agency Orders.

  • Calculation and processing of arrears for nationally-agreed Pay Awards and increments.

  • Issue of P45, P11D and P60 Certificates.

  • Liaison with Inland Revenue, Department of Social Security and Local Government Pension Section, including the production of statutory returns.

  • Processing of car mileage claims (approximately 1,500 per month).

  • Dealing with queries from banks and building societies.

  • Providing advice and answering queries from employees on payroll matters.

  • Providing payroll services to colleges and other external bodies.
