International study visit opportunities for teachers

Teachers International Professional Development (TIPD)

Between September 2004 - April 2006, the DFES will provide opportunities for teachers to go abroad, observe good practice and carry out research on a theme agreed among all participants.  Possible themes may be Special Education Needs and Inclusion, raising standards in inner city and rural areas, gifted and talented pupils, performance management, and many others of interest.

There will be 48 places available for Birmingham over the next 12 months.  A minimum of two teachers per school (with at least 2 years teaching experience) is required for participation in this programme.

Strand 3 of this programme is specifically designed for visits to developing countries.  Further information can be found on: http://www.britishcouncil.org/learning-tipd

Commonwealth Travel Grants

If it is difficult for the school to release two teachers at the same time, teachers can apply with the League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers for one of their Travel Grants.  There are 100 grants available each academic year, worth up to £500.  This grant can be used for overseas visits, exchanges and job shadowing.  For further information and application forms, please visit the following website: http://www.lect.org.uk/programmes/travel_uk/index.asp

LECT International Study trips

The League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers (LECT) is also offering International study trip opportunities to Commonwealth countries as well as Europe for a visit linked to professional development.  More information is available on the following website: http://www.lect.org.uk/programmes/study/index.asp

Council of Europe In-service Training Programme

The scheme enables teachers and educators (including inspectors, headteachers, teacher trainers etc.) to take part in in-service training courses abroad.  These courses take place over 3 to 5 days and cover a wide variety of themes from ‘Human rights and children’s rights’ in Belgium to ‘Drama and civic education’ in Bulgaria.  Cost of tuition and accommodation is funded by the host countries.
