Catering Services

Specialist knowledge and experience

Direct Services (Catering) has specialist knowledge of the education sector and has decades of experience working with school pupils in Birmingham.  Armed with this comprehensive experience we possess an inherent understanding of school catering and its specialist requirements.

One of our major objectives is to contribute to the ideals and objectives of the Education Development Plan.  The key themes of equality, partnership, achievement and inclusion are central to the thinking behind the services provided.  A poorly or under-nourished child is unlikely to concentrate and achievement will be impaired.

The following services are available:

  • Pre-school breakfast service

  • Mid morning refreshments

  • Mid-day meals service

  • After school refreshment service

  • Subsidised & Free Milk schemes

  • Vending Service

  • Staff Room Pre Paid Service

  • 6th Form Pre Paid Service

  • Water Facilities

  • Tuck Shops

Close working links with other aspects of the Education Service enable us to provide services which conform to requirements across the broad educational spectrum.  For example, links with the Birmingham Advisory & Support Service and the Health Education Unit help us to stay aware of and meet the requirements of the National Curriculum in relation to diet, nutrition and exercise.

In addition, other factors that are of major importance to schools and customers are:

  • To increase the level of take up of school meals especially those provided free of charge to pupils with entitlement;

  • To develop further and to improve the healthy eating provision;

  • To work in partnership with schools in order to best achieve and implement Government Guidelines on Nutrition, Obesity and Health in line with customer requirements;

  • To establish and implement ways of measuring and improving the  performance of the catering service.
