Framework Structure
Threads and Bands

CRISP lists 18 special educational themes called THREADS and breaks each of these threads down into 7 BANDS, forming an 18 x 7 matrix or grid.

The bands are numbered 0 - 6.  Band 0 represents the arrangements ordinarily made in a school for pupils with no difficulties on that thread, so no criteria are provided for this band.  Bands 1 - 6 represent increasingly intensive arrangements, and detailed criteria are provided for these.

Criteria

For each band in every thread, two kinds of criteria are provided:

  • Provision criteria

  • Assessment criteria

The Provision criteria are further itemised into four separate 'dimensions':

  • Curriculum - describing what needs to be taught

  • Staffing - specifying the special skills required by those working with the child

  • Resources - descriptions of the materials to be used

  • Environment and Facilities - focusing on the buildings and their use

For example, here is a typical set of criteria provided for a single band in one of the threads:

Example scenarios

Real-world example scenarios are also provided for Bands 4, 5 and 6.  Five examples are given for Provision criteria and five for Assessment criteria, under the headings:

Early Years Key Stage 1 Key Stage 2 Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4
