People skills

Consider how effective you are in your current role – especially important given the increasing emphasis on impact in the classroom and, where appropriate, across the team/whole school.

The evidence now emerging suggests that at all levels the impact which we have in our work is not just dependent on our “technical” skills/knowledge (e.g. curriculum, planning, assessment, management) but on our “people” skills.

Do we understand our own personal styles and how these impact on others – the “intra-personal” aspects of our effectiveness?

How can we understand (and improve) the effectiveness of our relationships with others (colleagues, pupils, parents) – the “interpersonal” skills?

Inviting feedback from colleagues on how they see you operating against these key skills is a brave and potentially very rewarding way of understanding your professional effectiveness and identifying really important aspects of your personal/professional development.  Similarly gaining feedback from a group of pupils on their perceptions of key aspects of "being in your classroom" could give you very significant evidence on which to reflect and set out professional development objectives.

BASS is working, with a partner organisation, on a structured feedback tool which your school can buy, called School Mentor. It will help you to look at your teaching skills and also deeper level professional characteristics. You may also want to look at the Transforming Learning website which would provide a structured approach for feedback from a sample of your pupils.
