Supporting pupils into education

The Pupil Connect Worker Team is comprised of 4 Learning Mentors (2 funded by Local Authority, 2 funded by Connexions), 2 Pupil Connexions Workers (European Social Fund) and 1 Attendance Support Worker (funded by Local Authority)

There is a wide range of experience and expertise within the team, who are all trained to work specifically with young people in an alternative provision setting. When a Pupil Connect Worker receives a new referral of a pupil without a school place from Education Welfare Duty or Connexions, the following procedures take place:

Initial home visit

Information exchange meeting during which the worker, pupil and family agree on the most suitable educational provision available and complete an individual pupil education plan.

Interview at placement

When the worker has arranged an interview, he/she will take pupil and parent(s) to the appointment at either an FE College, Training Provider or Alternative Provider. During this meeting, practical issues such as start dates, travel passes and special equipment are arranged by the worker.

Ongoing monitoring and support

Throughout the duration of each placement the allocated worker regularly contacts the young person to give advice, guidance and support if required. The individual action plan will be reviewed at each meeting and records are made of the pupil’s attendance, progress, achievement and behaviour on the course. Pupil Connect workers will intervene on behalf of the pupil if problems occur, in order to prevent the placement breaking down. At the end of year 11 every pupil is allocated a Connexions personal adviser to support them past the statutory school leaving age.

Inter-agency work

Pupil Connect workers liase directly with all other agencies connected with a particular pupil. This may involve Social Services or specialist services such as Youth Offending Service, Looked After Children’s Service and services for refugees and asylum seekers. Good contacts exist with agencies dealing with problems around drugs and homelessness.
