Supporting school-aged parents
There are many positive consequences of unintended
pregnancy and parenthood; however there are also negative
ones. The adverse social and economic consequences of
school age pregnancy and parenthood can be long term, and
affect both parent and child.
In order to prevent these adverse outcomes a
comprehensive approach is required which allows a pregnant
schoolgirl/school age parent the chance to continue their
education against a background of support that includes
education, health, and social care services, together with
peer support.
The School-Aged Parent Support Team aims to
facilitate this comprehensive approach to support
educational inclusion, and continues to develop ways to
support pregnant young women and parents of statutory
school age:
- To stay in school
- To go back into education
- To access childcare funding
- To continue learning
- To access transport
- To find services that meet their needs
The School-Aged Parent Support Team also
co-ordinates training and guidance to professionals who
work with school age pregnant/parent pupils, and offers
support to parents/carers.
There are two short introductory sessions for teachers
and other professionals to learn about specific aspects of
School-Aged Parent Support. Please click these titles
