Courses
Behaviour Support Service Inset Opportunities

The Behaviour Support Service offers a wide range of tailor-made courses to primary and secondary schools and other agencies.  Some courses are more applicable to a particular phase or group of staff but we can usually be flexible to meet your needs.  A selection is given below but please contact your local centre to discuss your individual requirements.  Alternatively ring 0121 303 0272 with your request and we will arrange for someone to contact you.  Contact information is available from the Contacts page.

Whole School Support / Training (Primary and Secondary)

Specific sessions can be tailored to the needs of particular groups of staff in schools. Please speak to your local centre or your school's In School Support worker to clarify what you need.
  • Lunchtime Development
This takes the form of a half hour pre-INSET meeting with senior staff to discuss any issues particular to the school; 2 x 1 hour INSET sessions with midday supervisors to give strategies for positive management of lunchtime behaviour with a focus on the issues for your school; a half-hour meeting with senior staff to feedback any issues.
  • Stories to Challenge Behaviour
A half-day practical workshop provides participants with a host of new and exciting ways to address challenging behaviour in the classroom. It focuses on the ways in which stories and story telling can be used to address issues such as poor behaviour, low motivation and disaffection with learning.
  • Introduction to Circle Time
This INSET is aimed at colleagues who have little or no experience of using Circle Time. Participants learn how to plan, organise and run sessions for their pupils.
  • Beyond Circle Time
This session looks at the organisation of Circle Time and explores some of the common difficulties in implementing successful Circle Time. It is expected that participants will have had some experience of Circle Time in their setting.
  • Circle of Friends
This introduction is especially relevant to staff working in Y2 to Y6. It looks at setting up a Circle of Friends as a supportive network for socially isolated pupils. A structured process and helpful guidelines make it simple to implement.
  • Pastoral support programmes and managed moves
Both PSPs and Managed Moves have been suggested by the DCSF as strategies for supporting children who are in danger of exclusion. Participants are introduced to practical guidance that has been issued to Birmingham schools.
  • TA School
This supports TA’s over five sessions to know more about and consolidate skills in behaviour related issues. The course includes modules such as Social Skills, Managing Behaviour, Supporting Children with ODD, ASD and ADHD, Creative Working and Circle Time.
  • Emotional Literacy
This session looks at a how emotions shape our actions and how we can think individually and collectively to enrich emotional understanding. Staff are helped to process emotions that might otherwise cause pupils to show rage or despair and to be unable to learn effectively.

  • Promoting Responsibility: Offending and Male Perceptions Today
A Theatre in Education approach to challenging pupil, especially male perceptions of modern day roles.
Pupil Support - Small Group Support (Secondary)
  • Behaviour Management
The session explores what is meant by anger management and considers how to recognise the early signs of anger. Strategies to manage anger as it happens and how to reduce the likelihood of further incidents are discussed.
  • Conflict Resolution
This session covers a variety of strategies to reduce and resolve conflict situations. We also consider the skills and attitudes the children need to learn to manage conflict for themselves.
  • Positively Girls
  • Positively Boys
This course is usually run for secondary pupils with presentation shared by school and BSS staff to develop your own skills as educators. It addresses some of the issues that many girls and boys encounter on a day-to-day basis. The course is a single gender course for pupils who are underachieving, have difficulties in making positive relationships or have low self worth.
