The Wise
Up on Attendance Campaign 2005/2006
Introduction
It is vitally important for our children’s futures that they have the best chance to achieve at school.
We know that there is a job to do in explaining the impact of even a few days absence on potential attainment.
We are setting the safety limit at no more than six days absence in a year.
That equates to 97% attendance.
Many parents, and pupils may consider 90% attendance to be very good. 90% can sound like a quite high achievement.
But this means a child missing four weeks school in a year.
80% can also sound reasonable but these pupils would be missing two months.
That is more than half a term.

| Background
This campaign is designed to support the work of schools, and the education welfare service, by raising awareness of what is actually “good” attendance, and the impact on attainment of varying levels of absence.
The materials supporting the campaign also deliver a range of management support strategies and curriculum resources to schools.
The approach has been built on the success of similar strategies used in individual schools, and the success of the city’s primary “Cool Cats” campaign.
The delivery of the campaign is designed to complement and add value to the work of schools, the education welfare service, and secondary strategy consultants.
The Wise Up Campaign will:
- Raise the profile of the value of education and of the importance of good attendance.
- Give clear messages to pupils, parents, staff, and others regarding pupil’s levels of absence and the likely impact this will have on the pupil’s attainment.
- Significantly raise parents, pupils, and others benchmarks for good attendance.
- Enhance communication between school and parent on attendance.
- Provide opportunities for curriculum based and network activity on attendance.
- Support and enhance schools/EWS management of attendance.
- Support the delivery of efficient use of statutory sanctions including Penalty Notices
Resources provided include:
- Standard letters to parents and pupils for use by schools, including a set of colour coded ranges of attendance.
- Curriculum materials and guidance notes for staff.
- Network workshops and training support.
- A poster, and a multi-media competition for all participating schools.
- Published posters and leaflets as designed by pupils.
