The Governing Body has a responsibility to take such steps that are reasonable and necessary to provide a safe working environment for staff, pupils, parents and other visitors to the school.

Comprehensive LEA guidance issued to all schools in 1997 In the document titled Security and Safety Strategy For the Education Service.  This includes details of risk assessments.  It is good practice to undertake an overall assessment of security for your premises and consider security issues when undertaking building schemes.  For further advice please contact your Asset Management Area Team.

Guidance can also be found in the DfES booklet Managing School Facilities, Guide 4, titled Improving School Security.  This is available from The Stationary Office Bookshop at 68-69 Bull Street, Birmingham, tel 0121 236 9696, priced £6.95.

General advice regarding the "designing out of crime" is available from the Police web site Secured by Design which includes advice about approval products and suppliers.  A Secured by Design Guide document is also available.  Schools should also liaise with, and obtain advice about security from their Area Crime Prevention Officer via the local police station.
