| Schools can apply for funds from five of the six Lottery distributing bodies, (Sport, Art, Heritage, Millennium and the New Opportunities Fund).
If schools are considering an application to the Sports Lottery, they must firstly liaise with
Asset Management and the Leisure and Culture Department. This is necessary as Sport England have recently indicated that they will no longer discuss bids with individual schools unless EPS (as the landlord) are
involved.
Bids to the sixth body, the National Lottery Charities Board, are restricted to organisations established, “for charitable, benevolent or philanthropic purposes” and would therefore involve the school in partnership with associated voluntary
organisations.
Recent changes made to the Lottery, particularly in the way distributors apply funds, mean that:
- the focus has shifted away from big building projects to people and activities;
- the requirement has been removed for significant levels of partnership funding, making it easier for less wealthy organisations and areas of the country to benefit;
- distributors are encouraged to look at how they can contribute to sustainable development and to reducing economic and social deprivation;
- all regions of the country and all parts of society can benefit from the lottery;
- the application process has been speeded up by allowing local distributors to have delegated powers.
