Assessment in the Foundation Stage

Foundation Stage Profile

The Foundation Stage Profile summarises children’s achievements by the end of the reception year for the early learning goals in the six areas of learning of the Foundation Stage. The Profile is based upon teachers’ on-going assessments through day-to-day learning and teaching, as well as the information provided by practitioners in previous settings and by parents/carers. The Profile is designed to be completed gradually as children progress through the reception year.

Nursery practitioners can also contribute to the Profile by recording any of the scale points that children achieve before moving into Reception. These are likely to be the early scale points derived from the Development Matters (previously the Stepping Stones). Both reception and nursery practitioners should use the e-Profile as the most effective way of monitoring children's progress and sharing assessments.

Nursery practitioner can also contribute to the Profile if they are using Progress Towards the Profile – see below Early Years Assessment prior to Reception.

  Progress Towards the Profile
Progress Towards the Profile launched in the autumn term 2007 is designed for the assessment of children in the year prior to reception. It has thirteen assessment scales covering the six areas of learning for the Early Years Foundation Stage, in the same way as the Foundation Stage Profile. Each scale contains the first three points from the equivalent scale in the Foundation Stage Profile, and a selection of development matters chosen to reflect development across the relevant area of learning. Progress Towards the Profile operates in the same way as the Foundation Stage Profile, with assessments made as and when children show sufficient evidence for practitioners to judge that they have attained particular scale points. It includes an adapted version of the eProfile, for recording assessments periodically as children progress.

Building on this, further development work is taking place to provide a birth to five assessment framework for Birmingham, in conjunction with the Centre for Research in Early Childhood (CREC).

Nursery Signposts is no longer available from the 2007-2008 school year.
